Creating the Concept

Phil Evans Photography was looking to update their website and came to Flavr for the second time as they were delighted with the results and client ratings of their previous site, which we had created for them, and for which we have been featured on a number of Inspiration Galleries – sites well regarded by the creative industry.

They returned to Flavr trusting us to provide them with a new website with a complete change of mood, and content. They wanted a lighter, engaging, image led site, yet with SEO that would improve their rankings, a blog and the ability to make better use of social media for promotional purposes, so we immediately began working out the concept for the site.

The Concept

The key to the site, and to some extent its challenge, was the content; the client, being in the business of creating images wanted to put images front stage, and not distract from them with unnecessary wordy clutter. The pay off here is that successful SEO requires word rich content to be most effective so, inspired by Vogue Magazine we designed page layouts that encompassed both striking images and attractive typography.

We also wanted to show Phil as the friendly face of photography, as approachable and fun, so suggested the idea of a photo shoot of Phil. Being a shy arty type, he took a little coaxing to venture to the other side of the lens, but he will be the first to admit that he’s now glad he did. Photographed in various fun ‘photo ‘ poses, we then animated Phil and used this to illustrate the website and his new Facebook Business Page: The result is friendly and fun – with the business benefit that people recognise his face and remember meeting Phil at the various wedding fairs he attends when they later visit the website.

Technical Challenges

Aside from creating a unique website, we also had to ensure that the usability of the site was intuitive, both for Phil Evans Photography’s clients and for the studio themselves to maintain. It was imperative that the website was easy for the Studio’s clients to navigate and we also needed to integrate an online viewing system and shop to the site, which wouldn’t require too much effort from users, or distract them from the content.

With little previous technical know-how, and even less time to learn, the Studio also needed a system that encouraged them to update the blog regularly and to tweet as they required. We therefore designed an intuitive bloging platform that is simple to use – we even provided drag and drop templates to enable them to upload images from recent shoots to the blog with minimum effort.
